Hypnotherapy

A complementary therapy using hypnosis

HYPNOTHERAPY is a type of complementary therapy that uses hypnosis, an altered state of consciousness, for stopping smoking, weight loss/eating control, fear of flying, phobias, anxieties, exam and driving test nerves, hypertension, pain and many other problems

Hypnotherapy is approved by the British Medical Association.

Hypnosis is a lot like daydreaming. When you daydream you alter your state of consciousness and let your mind wander, into fantasies. All the time you are conscious and aware, yet you remain oblivious to external distractions.

Hypnosis is a technique, which enables you to achieve this altered state of consciousness – the daydream state – deliberately and direct your attention to specific goals in order to achieve them.

In hypnosis, like daydreaming, you are conscious and aware, yet remain oblivious to external distractions. In hypnosis your conscious mind becomes quiet or passive and allows access to the unconscious, a powerful part of the mind. The Hypnotherapist is thus able to introduce positive suggestions into the unconscious mind.

After discussing the changes you wish to make and agreeing on the positive suggestions you want Margaret to make, you simply don headphones and lie back on a comfortable reclining chair as she induces deep relaxation and talks to your unconscious mind.

Gastric Band

There has been a lot in the press recently about obesity and hypnotic gastric banding.
So what is gastric banding?

Gastric banding is a surgical procedure that involves fitting a band around the upper part of your stomach. The placing of the band creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach. This pouch fills with food quickly and the band slows the passage of food from the pouch to the lower part of the stomach. As the upper part of the stomach registers as full, the message to the brain is that the entire stomach is full and this sensation helps the person to be hungry less often, to feel full more quickly and for a longer period of time, to eat smaller portions and lose weight over time

It is usually only recommended as a last resort for people who are morbidly obese (those with a BMI of over 40), or those with a BMI of between 30-40 who also have a condition that poses a serious health risk, such as diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), or heart disease.

Other criteria include: the patient is aged 18 or over, he/she has tried all other conventional methods of weight loss, such as exercise and diet, but have failed to lose any significant amount of weight, he/she has no medical or psychological reasons for not carrying out the procedure and he/she understands the long-term commitment to having a gastric band fitted, for example to continue to reduce food intake and maintain a regular exercise regime.

Hypnotic Gastric Banding

It is possible to be hypnotised into believing you have had a gastric band fitted – you get the results of surgery going under the knife.

I offer a hypnotic gastric band procedure, but I use the same criteria as the NHS and I require a patient to have two sessions of my standard eating/weight control before doing the gastric band sessions.

Some common myths about Hypnotherapy

MYTH: A person can be made to do things against their will

False. No one can be hypnotised against their will and no one can be made to do anything under hypnosis that they would not do if not under hypnosis. When under hypnosis you can choose to accept or reject any suggestion given. You can say NO.

MYTH: Only weak minded people can be hypnotised

The contrary – almost anyone who wants to be hypnotised can be hypnotised.

MYTH: You can get stuck in hypnosis

False. Even if the Hypnotherapist were to drop dead the person under hypnosis would come out of hypnosis easily. You may fall into a brief sleep then awaken normally or you will open your eyes when the therapists voice has not been heard for a while. Some people do not want to come out of hypnosis – enjoying the feeling or can’t be bothered to open their eyes.

MYTH: Deep hypnosis is necessary for good results

Not true. Any level of hypnosis can bring good results. In fact if the hypnosis is too deep you may be “dreamy” and unable to differentiate between fantasy and reality.

MYTH: When in hypnosis the person is in a trance or asleep

Not true at all. Under hypnosis you are awake and very aware – in a state of heightened awareness. You may not feel that you are “under” and may say that, but the hypnotherapist can tell whether you are under hypnosis

You may not feel any different, only relaxed but there are signs:

  • Facial flush
  • lickering eyes
  • Swallowing
  • Slower breathing
  • Relaxation of muscles, especially cheeks, jowls

You may feel:

  • Heavy or light feeling in limbs or body
  • Tingling sensation
  • Floating feeling
